Where Crimes Converge: Rethinking Economic Crime Control
8th Winter Economic Crime Symposium 2027
Thursday 14 January 2027 | 10:00-15:00 GMT
Online via Zoom Webinar
Crime convergence is usually presented as a threat. Wildlife trafficking turns out to be entangled with drugs, arms and people smuggling. Scam compounds combine fraud with human trafficking and forced labour. Responses, meanwhile, still work crime by crime and agency by agency.
But convergence can also be an opportunity.
Crimes that share routes and money also share weak points, and the money is often the weakest. A tax inspector, a wildlife ranger or a bank's fraud analyst may be better placed to disrupt a network than the agency formally in charge of it. This symposium asks what convergence means for who intervenes against economic crime, and how. It follows the money into the shell companies, financial systems and property where crimes meet, and explores what works when responses connect.
The 8th Winter Economic Crime Symposium brings together researchers, practitioners, students and members of the wider community to discuss how we can move from crime-by-crime responses to more connected approaches to economic crime control.
