Ever wondered how scientists know how old the Earth is? Or how can we put exact dates on rocks that formed billions of years ago?

In this webinar, we’ll explain how rocks are dated and how geologists use radiometric uranium–lead (U–Pb) dating to measure geological time. By analysing tiny minerals that contain uranium and using the predictable nature of radioactive decay, scientists can calculate the age of rocks with incredible accuracy.

This science, known as geochronology, underpins everything we know about Earth’s history. It tells us when the Earth formed, how continents developed, when life evolved, and exactly when major events happened—such as the Chicxulub asteroid impact that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Geochronology also helps us understand how and when huge mountain ranges like the Himalaya were formed.

Here at the University of Portsmouth, we have world‑leading expertise in geochronology, including Dr Catherine Mottram, who will deliver this webinar. We also have world leading laboratory facilities used to carry out cutting-edge isotopic analyses at the forefront of Earth and planetary science research.

During this LIVE from the Lab webinar, you’ll get behind‑the‑scenes access to these facilities and an all‑areas insight into how geochronology is really done—from analysing minerals to calculating ages. You’ll also learn about current research at the University of Portsmouth, including planetary geology and how ore deposits form.

We’ll even carry out live analyses, so you can see real science in action and discover what studying geology at university is really like!
