Join us virtually to explore what it’s like to study sociology in practice
This taster will offer a glimpse of the questions, methods and debates you will encounter on the course through the current research of Dr George Ackers. Drawing on original research with tradeswomen and tradesmen in Britain's Royal Dockyards, the session will explore how gender shapes access to meaningful work and how sociology reveals the structural inequalities that everyday experiences often conceal.
What is it really like to have a career as a social researcher? One of the aims of our MSc Sociology is to engage with contemporary sociology and cutting-edge social research. Rather than focusing only on classic thinkers or historical studies, the programme explores research that is happening now and addresses some of today's most pressing social issues. This commitment is reflected in our module Sociology in Action, which introduces students to current research and demonstrates how sociological ideas and methods are used to understand and address real-world problems.
The programme is designed to give you the opportunity to develop your own research ideas while building the skills needed for careers within and beyond academia.
Whether you join us live or watch the recording later, we hope this session gives you a flavour of studying sociology in practice and what you can expect from the MSc Sociology programme when you join us in September.
