International Student Ambassador Imran shares his tips to explore the UK while you study
5 min read
Traveling within the UK is a fantastic way to explore the country's rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes. As an international student at the University of Portsmouth, you have the perfect opportunity to discover everything from bustling cities to serene countryside.
Here’s my guide to help you make the most of your travels across the UK, including some money-saving tips.
Exploring the UK by train
The UK boasts an extensive and efficient rail network, making it one of the most convenient ways to travel between cities and regions in my opinion. Here are my tips to help you navigate the train system effectively:
1. Get a railcard
One of the best ways to save money on train travel in the UK is by purchasing a Railcard. Railcards offer up to 1/3 off most rail fares across the UK. Here are a few options you might consider:
- 16-25 Railcard: Available for anyone aged 16-25 or full-time students. Costs £30 per year and offers substantial savings on rail tickets.
- 26-30 Railcard: This railcard also costs £30 annually and offers similar discounts.
- Two Together Railcard: If you frequently travel with a friend or partner, this railcard provides savings for two named people traveling together.
- Family & Friends Railcard: Perfect if you are traveling with children, this card offers discounts for up to four adults and four children traveling together.
Tip: Railcards can be purchased online or at major train stations. You can even get a digital version on your smartphone.
2. Book in advance
Train tickets in the UK can be quite expensive if purchased at the last minute. To get the best deals, book your tickets in advance. Tickets usually go on sale 12 weeks before the travel date, and the earlier you book, the more you can save.
3. Use rail apps
Download rail apps like Trainline or National Rail Enquiries to check train times, compare ticket prices, and book your journey. These apps also provide live updates on train schedules and any potential delays.
4. Consider off-peak travel
Traveling during off-peak times is generally cheaper and less crowded. Off-peak times vary depending on the route, so check specific details when booking your tickets.
5. Look for split tickets
Sometimes, booking separate tickets for different parts of a journey (known as "split ticketing") can be cheaper than buying a single ticket for the entire trip. Websites like Split My Fare can help you find these deals.
Exploring the UK by bus/coach
Traveling by bus is often cheaper than taking the train, especially for longer distances. Here are my tips for making the most of bus travel:
1. Use National Express and Megabus
National Express and Megabus are two of the most popular long-distance bus companies in the UK, offering affordable travel between major cities and towns. They often have deals where fares start as low as £1 if booked in advance. And they also offer student discounts!
2. Get a coachcard
Similar to railcards, coachcards offer discounts on bus fares. For example, the National Express Young Persons Coachcard offers 1/3 off fares and is available for those aged 16-26 or full-time students.
3. Book in advance
Just like with train travel, booking bus tickets in advance can lead to significant savings. Both National Express and Megabus offer discounted fares for early bookings.
Exploring the UK by Air
For longer distances, flying might be the fastest and most convenient option. Here are my tips for air travel:
1. Use budget airlines
Budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet offer cheaper flights within the UK and to nearby European destinations. You can also keep an eye out for special deals and promotions.
2. Book early
As with other modes of transport, booking your flights early usually results in better prices. You can also set fare alerts to stay updated on price changes.
3. Consider nearby airports
When flying to or from a major city, consider nearby airports that may offer cheaper flights. For example, flying into London Gatwick instead of Heathrow can sometimes be more affordable. You can also get direct trains to Gatwick Airport and Southampton Airport.
General travel tips
1. Check student discounts
Many transport companies offer special discounts for students, so always check before booking tickets. Having your student ID or university card handy can help you access these deals.
2. Travel light
When traveling by train or bus, try to pack light to make your journey more comfortable and avoid additional baggage fees.
3. Explore regional passes
If you plan to explore a specific region, look for regional travel passes that offer unlimited travel within that area. For example, the Highland Rover Travel Pass provides unlimited travel on certain routes in Scotland.
4. Stay connected
Consider getting a UK SIM card with data to stay connected on the go. This will help you access maps, check travel updates, and keep in touch with friends.
5. Embrace the journey
Finally, remember that the journey is part of the adventure. Whether you're traveling by train, bus, car, or plane, take the time to enjoy the scenery, meet new people, and immerse yourself in the diverse culture of the UK.
By taking advantage of these travel tips, I believe you can explore the UK on a budget and make unforgettable memories during your time as an international student. Safe travels, and enjoy your adventures!
