The University of Portsmouth is hosting the international premiere of the award-winning documentary ‘And More Miles to Go Before I Sleep’ on Tuesday 21 March.
The film tells the story of Nguyen Quoc Phi, an undocumented migrant worker, or a ‘runaway’, in northern Taiwan who was shot nine times by the police and left unattended by paramedics in 2017.
What made him ‘run away’ from his factory work? How did he find jobs in various construction sites? Why did he start taking drugs? Was he an imperfect victim? These are straightforward questions leading to complicated answers. The documentary explores the issue of migrant workers' human rights and brings attention to the challenges to humanity if we choose to be bystanders indifferent to inequality and injustice.
The screening is the film's overseas debut after winning the Best Documentary Feature of the Golden Horse Festival, one of the prestigious Chinese-language festivals, last November. It has been organised by Dr Isabelle Cockel, from the University’s Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR) Women and De-colonising Spaces Research Group. The screening, which is open to the public, starts at 12 noon in the University’s Learning Centre. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance here.
