Jo Churchill MP met with the team behind the recently announced Global Plastic Policy Centre and discussed the challenges and opportunities in tackling the global plastic pollution crisis

Government Minister Jo Churchill MP visited the University last week to learn more about the work being done by Revolution Plastics and the Centre for Enzyme Innovation.

The Minister met with the team behind the recently announced Global Plastic Policy Centre and discussed the challenges and opportunities in tackling the global plastic pollution crisis.

Ms Churchill was in Portsmouth on Thursday (5 May) and was given a tour of the new state of the art facilities at the Centre for Enzyme Innovation. There she met with specialist researchers working on enzyme based plastic recycling solutions.

Professor Steve Fletcher, Director of the Global Plastic Policy Centre said, “as academics working to find solutions to the plastic pollution crisis through policy change, it was fantastic to be able to welcome Jo to Portsmouth and discuss the role academia in plastics policy. Ultimately academia, government and industry all need to work together to solve this pressing issue.”

Professor John McGeehan, Director of the Centre for Enzyme Innovation said, “it was a great opportunity to demonstrate how our latest enzymes can break down single-use plastics in our new biorecycling facilities, and discuss how the UK economy can benefit from these technologies”.
