The new facility will encourage sustainable travel to campus and will feature a solar panel roof

Work has begun on a new 336-space Cycle Hub at the University of Portsmouth. The project is part of the University’s ambitious Estate Masterplan, investing £250 million in developing the campus, and part of the University’s commitment to improving facilities and enhancing the student experience.

The Cycle Hub is being built on the site of the University’s former Nuffield car park, on St Michael’s Road. The project will introduce over 336 new secure cycle spaces to campus, as well as lockers and showers available for staff and students to use. The new facility will support healthier and more sustainable travel to the city-centre campus.

The site has been designed with safety and security in mind, and will feature secure swipe card access, LED lighting, and CCTV security.

The facility will also feature a full solar panel roof, reinforcing the University’s sustainability ambitions. This follows from the success of the University’s Ravelin Sports Centre, recognised as one of the most energy-efficient sports centres in the UK.

The new Cycle Hub is expected to take around 7 months to complete and will enhance the University’s existing cycle storage provision.

Estate Masterplan

The new Cycle Hub is part of the University’s long-term Estates Masterplan, which is investing in a more connected, sustainable and student-focused campus. Through a combination of new buildings and the refurbishment of existing facilities, each project will enhance day-to-day student life.

This includes the redevelopment of the Wiltshire Building, which will provide a more accessible and welcoming space to access Student Services, and the creation of the new Student Hub, bringing together the Students’ Union, wellbeing services and social study spaces in one vibrant, central location.
