Professor Becky Milne has been recognised for building a supportive, creative and inclusive culture for students.
Becky Milne, Professor of Forensic Psychology in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, has been shortlisted in the Outstanding Research Supervisor of the Year category at this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.
The THE Awards are widely known as the ‘Oscars of higher education’.
Professor Milne has been recognised for building a supportive, creative and inclusive culture for students from all walks of life and from all over the world.
Professor Milne said: “I am absolutely thrilled, this is such an honour, not only for me personally and the University, but also for the many students I have had the pleasure in being part of their research journey.”
She has been known as ‘Grandma Prof’ to her students, Professor Milne’s mantra is “a research student is for life and not for Christmas”.
She has nurtured her research family to achieve amazing success and sees her own mentoring as a career-long programme, providing opportunities to co-author books, book chapters, research papers and grant applications.
As well as inspiring students to achieve academic and professional excellence, Professor Milne has helped them when they have needed her the most. She secured funding to help a student who had brain surgery complete their viva voce, while Professor Milne herself suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2013, which required life-saving surgery, and she still adapts her teaching to cope with the residual effects.
