The construction of a wildflower amphitheatre as part of the landscaping works for the University of Portsmouth’s Ravelin Sports Centre will begin 3 August in Ravelin Park. This biodiverse amphitheatre will provide a new public events space to integrate with the new sports centre whilst supporting the development of the local ecosystem.
The 13 week work programme will include excavation and landscaping of earth works into a three tier grassed amphitheatre and the sowing of wildflower and grass seed.
Fiona Bell, Director of Estates and Campus Services said “Construction of Ravelin Sports Centre is progressing well. Work is ready to start on developing the biodiversity of the surrounding parkland which will in time benefit our community and the environment.”
The University’s Ravelin Sports Centre recently won best Public Sector Project: Design Stage at the BREEAM Awards 2020 and has achieved the top rating of ‘Outstanding’, setting a significant benchmark as one of the UK’s greenest sports centres. BREEAM is a long-established world-leading rating system for certifying the sustainability of buildings.
Ravelin Sports Centre will feature a swimming pool, 175 station fitness suite, climbing wall, ski simulator and sports hall and is due to open to the public in 2022.
The University is investing £400M over 10 years into developing its campus in Portsmouth’s city centre. This Estate Masterplan includes constructing new landmark buildings and creating new public spaces in order to support its strategy to be sustainable and create a vibrant experience for all.
