Two internationally renowned security experts are speaking at a free University of Portsmouth event next week.

With the growth of cyber technology making us more reliant on computers and the internet, the speakers will discuss cyber security, protecting personal data, the threats of tomorrow and more.

Dr Dafydd Townley, from the University of Portsmouth's Military Education Team, said: “Cyber security threats are ever evolving with the rapid increase in technology in all areas of life, and the risks are severe. It will be fascinating to hear from two leading experts on the vulnerabilities created by these technologies and what we can do to protect ourselves from them.”

The guest speakers are:

  • Andy Bochman is Senior Grid Strategist at the Idaho National Laboratory's National and Homeland Security directorate. Andy provides strategic guidance on topics at the intersection of grid security and climate resilience and adaptation to senior U.S. and international government and industry leaders.
  • Professor Victoria Baines, of Gresham College, is a leading authority in the field of online trust, safety and cybersecurity. Having worked for both Facebook and Interpol, Victoria now provides research expertise to a number of international organisations, including Interpol, UNICEF and the Council of Europe.

The event is hosted by the University of Portsmouth in collaboration with the US Embassy, the American Politics Group of the UK Political Studies Association, and the British Association for American Studies.

It is part of the event series: Unfolding Our Shared Future - Challenge, Possibility and Potential in US and UK Politics.

The event is on Thursday 19 January at 5.30pm in the University’s Eldon Building. Tickets are free, but please book your place via Eventbrite.
