Danny Beard wore the creation down the red carpet at this year's BAFTAs
A member of staff in the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Creative & Cultural Industries has designed and made an outfit for RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, Danny Beard, which they wore down the red carpet at last month’s BAFTAs.
Joshua Hansler, Lead Sewing Workshop Technician and University alum, designed the outfit specially for the Season 4 winner of Drag Race UK. The look consisted of a black and white, multi print, panelled sequin trench coat with ostrich feather embellishments and custom made belts worn over the top of a faux latex catsuit with matching accessories, and featured prominently in the national media’s coverage of the event, which is widely regarded as the UK’s premier television and film awards show.
This is not the first time that Joshua’s work has appeared on screen, with their most recent work featured on the BBC's 'Glow up' in partnership with the MAC VIVA GLAM Campaign, Rupaul's Drag Race UK Season 4 and the popular soap Hollyoaks.
Joshua also supports Portsmouth Pride’s drag competition where they gift the winning drag artist with a voucher for an outfit.
Joshua said: “We had five days to source the fabrics, make the patterns, cut, sew and embellish this look. Feathers were still being hand sewn five minutes before the look was worn down the red carpet, but that's nothing new with this industry. There's nothing hard work, a hope and a prayer can’t do.”
