Overview

This MEng Innovation Engineering integrated Master’s degree course is for people with big ideas and a desire to make them a reality. If you think we can tackle global problems with engineering and clever technology, this is the course for you.

You’ll develop skills in mechanical, electronic, design and materials engineering and alongside communication, entrepreneurial and leadership skills.

As a Master in innovation engineering, you’ll be prepared for solving problems that impact society. You could work in areas such as visualisation and data management, medical and allied health, and industrial and scientific research.

Placement year

Tuition fees (2018 start)

  • UK/EU/Channel Islands and Isle of Man students – £9,250 per year (may be subject to annual increase)
  • International students – £15,100 per year (subject to annual increase)

These course-related costs aren’t included in the tuition fees. So you’ll need to budget for them when you plan your spending.

You’ll study up to 6 units a year. You may have to read several recommended books or textbooks for each unit.

You can borrow most of these from the Library. If you buy these, they may cost up to £60 each.

We recommend that you budget £75 a year for photocopying, memory sticks, DVDs and CDs, printing charges, binding and specialist printing.

If your final year includes a major project, there could be cost for transport or accommodation related to your research activities. The amount will depend on the project you choose.

You’ll be involved in several project units over the course of your study, and you may need to pay additional costs towards transportation and accommodation for these units. The exact amount will vary depending on the units chosen.

You’ll go on occasional trips as part of your studies. You’ll need to contribute £25 per trip.

We use the best and most current research and professional practice alongside feedback from our students to make sure course content is relevant to your future career or further studies.

Maths and stats support

The Maths Cafe offers free advice and assistance with mathematical skills in a friendly, informal environment. You can come to our daily drop-in sessions, develop your maths skills at a workshop or use our online resources.

Teaching​

Teaching methods on this course include:

You'll also use facilities for Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL), which is an alternative to the traditional lecture-style learning. This makes it easier for you to collaborate with other students and take part in team-based problem solving.

How you'll spend your time

Each academic year is divided into 2 teaching blocks and an assessment period:

  • Autumn teaching block – September to December
  • Spring teaching block – January to Easter
  • Assessment period – Easter to June

Most teaching takes place during the day, Monday to Friday. There's no teaching on Wednesday afternoons. You may occasionally need to go to University and course events in the evenings and at weekends.

Your workload

The time you spend in teaching activities such as lectures and seminars varies year on year and will depend on which optional units you select. As a guide, students on this course last year typically spent their time as follows:

  • Year 1 students: 32% in lectures, seminars and similar learning activities, and 68% studying independently
  • Year 2 students: 27% in lectures, seminars and similar learning activities, and 73% studying independently
  • Year 3 students: 18% in lectures, seminars and similar learning activities, and 82% studying independently
  • Year 4 students: 16% in lectures, seminars and similar learning activities, and 84% studying independently

You’ll be able to test your skills and knowledge informally before you do assessments that count towards your final mark.

You can get feedback on all practice and formal assessments so you can improve in the future.

The way you’re assessed may depend on the units you select. As a guide, students on this course last year were typically assessed as follows:

  • Year 1 students: 84% by written exams and 16% by coursework
  • Year 2 students: 56% by written exams, 13% by practical exams and 31% by coursework
  • Year 3 students: 60% by written exams and 40% by coursework
  • Year 4 students: 42% by written exams, 5% by practical exams and 53% by coursework
