Biography

Emma joined the School of Social, Historical & Literary Studies in September 2011. She previously worked at The Royal Opera House as its Features Editor for online and digital copy, writing blogs, biogs and interviews, and helping update the opera house’s social media accounts. Before that, she was Deputy Editor of The Art Newspaper, a monthly arts publication for art world insiders, and prior to that helped edit and produce Minerva, a journal for ancient art lovers.

As an undergraduate, she studied Spanish and Italian at Exeter University, and later did an MSc at Portsmouth University, in Museum and Heritage Studies. Her dissertation centred on the painter Constable and the modern-day conservation of the landscapes he depicted.

Her research interests are cultural consumption and criticism, particularly the role of the critic in the popular press.
