Summary

I am a Senior Lecturer in Law. My main areas of expertise are data protection law and policy, and law and emerging technologies.

I have previously lectured in law at the University of Hertfordshire and also at the University of Southampton, where I completed my PhD.

I am also Deputy Editor for Computer Law & Security Review (CLSR), an international journal of technology and law and practice. The journal provides a major platform for the publication of high quality research, policy and legal analysis in the field of IT law and computer security. In 2015 the journal became the first of its kind in the world to be indexed in the Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports for Social Sciences.

I also provide freelance data protection consultancy services to a number of firms based in London and the South of the UK. I have previously worked for a private surveillance company.

Biography

I joined the University in November 2018. I had previously been Lecturer in Law at the University of Hertfordshire from July 2015, and Tutor in Law at the University of Southampton from December 2012 until June 2015.

I hold an LLB in Law from the University of Reading (2011), an LLM (Distinction) in Regulation and Technology from King’s College, University of London (2012) and a PhD in Law from the University of Southampton (2020).

In February 2013 I was pleased to receive The Dickson Poon School of Law Prize for Best Student on the LLM in Regulation and Technology at King’s College, University of London.

I have also previously worked for a private surveillance and investigations company, and I have been Deputy Editor of CLSR since January 2019.

Research interests

My research primarily focuses on the development of data protection law and policy, both nationally and internationally, and I am widely published in this field.

My PhD thesis examined data handling and disclosure practices of public sector organisations and how, given the limits of anonymisation techniques, these may represent a risk to individual privacy and data protection.

I am also interested in IT law, media law, freedom of information, data governance, and the interplay between law and emerging technologies more generally.

Teaching responsibilities

I am module coordinator for Data Protection Law & Policy, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I have also previously taught Criminal Law, Public Law, EU Law, and Medical Law.

I welcome applications for PhD supervision on topics related to data protection law and policy.

Media availability

I am happy to be contacted by the media about my research interests in data protection law and policy, and I am aware of the need to respond to journalists in a timely manner. Please contact me at henry.pearce@port.ac.uk in the first instance.
