Summary

I am a Senior Lecturer in Law in the School of Civil Engineering and Surveying. I have experience in teaching construction, contract, tort, land and landlord and tenant law.

My research interests focus on contracts and construction law. I recently completed a masters in Construction Law and Practice during which I undertook an 18,000 word dissertation titled "The Building Safety Act 2022: Evaluating the implications on defect claims". This project focused on the implications of the new and extended causes of action for residential defect claims introduced by the Building Safety Act 2022 on industry. It also investigated the implications of the associated extension to prospective and retrospective limitation periods applicable to these claims and the introduction of a new remedy, building liability orders (BLOs), that effectively enable the court to extend liability beyond the entity involved in the original build and through to its associated companies.

I am interested in research projects associated with the Building Safety Act 2022, from both industry and homeowner perspectives. This could include residential defect claims or the wider changes impacting building safety, such as the new 'golden thread' requirements concerning information management relating to building safety. I am also interested in exploring the application of BLOs and their wider implications on corporate law.

I am also available to supervise socio-legal research research within these fields.

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Law within the School of Civil Engineering and Surveying at the University of Portsmouth. As part of this role, I am responsible for the design, coordination and delivery of various legal modules required for surveying students studying an RICS accredited degree pathway. These modules cover the subjects of tort law, contract law, land law and landlord and tenant law. I also provide teaching support on various construction law modules. In addition, I support colleagues with the design and delivery of online and blended learning materials.

Prior to working in Higher Education, I qualified and worked as a commercial solicitor in private practice and in-house on secondment with a large horticultural charity. My experience focused on advising on, drafting and amending a range of commercial contracts and providing advice on associated legal issues including franchising arrangements, data protection and consumer law. I also have experience of assisting the construction team with amendments to standard form contracts and drafting framework agremeents for large scale construction projects.
