Through the RAID Lab, I lead interdisciplinary research that brings together academics, doctoral researchers, industry and public-sector partners to develop responsible AI frameworks, decision-support approaches and practical solutions for organisational and societal challenges.
Biography
I have worked in academia since 2011, with teaching, research and academic leadership experience across Pakistan, China, France and the UK. My academic career has developed at the intersection of business information systems, digital transformation and, increasingly, Responsible Artificial Intelligence.
I hold a PhD in Business Management, specialising in Digital Business, from the School of Business Administration at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE), China, and an MSc in Business Information Systems from the University of Bolton, UK. My interdisciplinary background in business management, information systems, digital business and computing continues to shape my approach to research, teaching and engagement with organisations.
My earlier research examined digital business, social commerce, e-commerce, omnichannel retailing, online consumer behaviour and organisational IT capabilities. This work has progressively developed towards digital transformation, data-driven decision-making, organisational resilience, Responsible AI, AI governance, explainability and AI-enabled managerial decision-making.
My research has been published in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals including Government Information Quarterly, Information Technology & People, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Journal of Business Research, Psychology & Marketing, Electronic Markets, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, and Industrial Management & Data Systems.
Alongside my publications, I have developed a growing portfolio of externally and internally funded research, enterprise and knowledge-exchange activity. I have served as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on projects supported by Research England, Portsmouth City Council and international research partners, covering areas including AI leadership, digital transformation, organisational resilience and hybrid and connected learning. I am also engaged in Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) activity aimed at translating academic expertise in digital transformation and AI into practical organisational innovation.
My work increasingly connects academic research with policy and practice. This includes contributing research-informed perspectives to UK Parliament on Responsible AI regulation, collaborating with public-sector and industry partners, and developing international research relationships across Europe, the United States, China and the Middle East.
I supervise doctoral and MRes researchers and contribute to research mentoring, knowledge exchange and academic development. My teaching spans undergraduate, postgraduate and research levels, particularly in digital transformation, business information systems, digital agility, business analytics and AI-enabled transformation. Across these activities, my focus is on producing rigorous research that can inform organisational decision-making and the responsible adoption of emerging technologies.
Research interests
My research sits at the intersection of Business Information Systems, Digital Transformation and Responsible Artificial Intelligence. I am particularly interested in how organisations adopt, govern and use digital technologies and AI to improve decision-making, organisational performance, resilience and wider organisational outcomes.
My research trajectory has evolved from earlier work on digital business, social commerce, e-commerce, omnichannel environments, online consumer behaviour and organisational IT capabilities towards a more focused programme of research on digital transformation, data-driven decision-making, Responsible AI and AI-enabled organisational decision-making. This reflects a broader interest in understanding not only how emerging technologies create value, but also how they can be implemented responsibly, transparently and effectively within organisational settings.
My current research interests include:
1. Responsible AI, AI governance, explainability and ethical decision-making
2. AI-enabled managerial and organisational decision-making
3. Digital Transformation strategy, organisational capabilities and change
4. Business Information Systems and data-driven decision-making
5. Organisational resilience, digital agility and technology-enabled performance
6. Responsible AI adoption in public-sector and highly regulated environments
7. Emerging technologies, including autonomous systems and Augmented Reality
8. Digital business, e-commerce, social commerce and omnichannel environments
A key focus of my current research is the development of Responsible AI frameworks, measures and decision-support approaches that can translate responsible AI principles into practical organisational applications. Through the Responsible AI Decision (RAID) Lab, my doctoral supervision and collaborative research, I am increasingly developing this agenda across public-sector, financial, healthcare, pharmaceutical, aviation and other organisational contexts.
My ongoing research continues to build towards a coherent programme centred on the responsible and effective use of AI and digital technologies in organisational decision-making, with an emphasis on both theoretical development and practical organisational impact.
Due to my current portfolio of ongoing doctoral supervisions, I am not accepting new PhD students until the end of 2028.
Teaching responsibilities
I have extensive teaching experience across undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree programmes, with particular expertise in Business Information Systems, Digital Transformation, Digital Business, Digital Agility and Emerging Technologies.
In my current role, I coordinate/lead and teach the following postgraduate modules:
1. Digital Transformation
2. Digital Operations Transformation and AI
I also contribute to teaching in Digital Agility and Transformation and have previously led and taught modules including Customer Experience Management, Customer Relationship Management, Business Analytics and Decision Modelling, Business Systems and Work-Based Learning.
I have substantial experience in module design, development and coordination. My teaching combines contemporary academic research with practical organisational challenges, enabling students to understand how digital technologies, information systems, data and artificial intelligence can support organisational transformation, operational improvement and decision-making.
Before joining Portsmouth, I taught at undergraduate, postgraduate, Executive MBA and MRes levels in Pakistan and China. My teaching portfolio has included Management Information Systems, Business Information Systems, e-Commerce, Project Management, Business Communication, Public Administration and related digital business subjects.
I also contribute to research-level teaching and supervision, including PhD and MRes supervision and research methods development. Alongside university teaching, I have delivered invited lectures, professional development sessions and industry-facing teaching in areas including digital transformation, quantitative analysis, digitisation and artificial intelligence.
