The Responsible AI Decision (RAID) Lab is a cross-faculty research and innovation lab at the University of Portsmouth under the research centre of CORDA. The Lab brings together expertise in digital systems and artificial intelligence from PAiDS, with a particular focus on responsible and explainable AI in decision-making contexts.
Academically grounded and practice oriented, the Lab welcome collaboration and inward investment from interested national and international parties, including but not limited from government, publica organisations, healthcare, finance, energy, marine and other regulated environments.
For more information or use of the lab please contact the Lab Director, Dr Muhammad Awais Shakier Goraya
Research topics
- Operationalising RAI principles and frameworks, typologies of implementation
- AI governance, accountability, assurance and institutional oversight mechanisms
- Evaluation and measurements methods of AI decisions (metrics and indicators)
- Methodological advancement in enhancing explainability and transparency
- Human-AI interactions in complex business decisions
- Organisational change and transformation towards AI (and augmented) decisions
- Advancing ethical AI machines - reduction of bias in data and models
- Non-functional requirements and socio-technical design for AI systems
The Lab
- Provides an intellectual space for doctoral researchers to pursue diverse questions in AI on governance methods, RAI development and application cross sectors.
- Runs an advisory committee drawing on expertise from UK central government bodies and industry AI specialists. The committee provides guidance and mentorship to selected projects and ensures that the Lab’s research remains attentive to practice-based, policy-relevant, and pragmatic considerations.
- Will be located in an industry facing physical presence at the University of Portsmouth, further strengthening its role as a focal point for interdisciplinary, industry engaged collaboration and innovation in Responsible AI.
Methods
RAID Lab adopts an interdisciplinary methodological approach that draws on operational research, decision analytics, digital systems, and artificial intelligence. Its research combines conceptual, empirical, applied forms of inquiry, experimental, prototypes and simulations, to examine how RAI can be advanced, evaluated, governed, and implemented for responsible decisions across complex organisational and societal settings.
Collaborations and engagements
RAID Lab promotes collaboration across academic, public, and practice-based settings. As a cross-disciplinary platform, it brings together complementary expertise to address the RAI decision issues in organisations.
The Lab currently engages with UK public sector organisations, Innovate UK, SMEs in developing solutions addressing AI governance, assurance, and responsible deployment of AI in real-world contexts.
Examples include work with Responsible Systems Ltd, (trading as RAI Tracker - RAIT), to develop RAI metrics and The Frontier AI Benchmarking Datasets (Application in process). RAI Tracker is a UK company building an assurance platform for organisations deploying AI.
