Dr Van Norris
Biography
I have worked at the University of Portsmouth since 2003 and I am a Senior Lecturer in Film, Media and Animation History and Theory Studies. Previous to working in academia I was a successful freelancer film reviewer, between 1990-1993, working regualrly for Southern Life magazine (the supplement to the Southern Daily Echo) in local radio, editing and presenting my own entertainment programme between 1997-1999. From there I took the (logical?) step into working in support and admin roles within the mental health services, before subsequently becoming a full-time academic.
Research interests
My research interests lie in British and American animation history and theory and British and American televisual comedy forms - such as sitcom, stand up and comedy production and history. My Third Year undergraduate units in Comedy and Animation history and theory are unique to Portsmouth and the material within those narratives have been channeled into my published and presented internationally-regarded research. These are also areas that I bring to the FMC MA programme on our Media Contexts module.
