Language degrees at Portsmouth provide a profound understanding of diverse cultures. Here, you'll not only enhance your linguistic proficiency, but also delve into the rich history of the countries and cultures associated with the languages you study.

Discover where your language journey can take you at our Languages Taster Day on June 4, 2024. Choose your language of focus – French, Spanish, or German – when you book your place, and prepare for hands-on experience in our Digital Language Laboratories.

You'll also be able to find out about our year abroad option, where you can immerse yourself in the culture of the countries where your chosen language, and find out about gaining internationally-recognised teaching qualifications, such as the Trinity Certificate in TESOL.

Explore Language degrees at the University of Portsmouth

At our Discover Languages Taster Day you'll:

  • Get immersed in interpreting and transcribing your favourite language with our hands-on sessions
  • Explore our Digital language laboratories where you'll take on real-time learning activities throughout the day
  • Choose from French, Spanish or German to make sure you're developing the linguistics of the language you love the most
  • Get a glimpse into our undergraduate experiences of working abroad in a range of roles using their language skills to set them apart from other students
  • Discover exciting careers and where Language degrees can take you in the future 
  • Uncover two new languages that will immerse you in their culture and traditions to give you a hunger for broadening your skills
  • Gain practical experience that you can talk about on your UCAS personal experience - demonstrating your passion for Modern Foreign Languages

Taster Day location and meeting point

We'll meet at Park Building, King Henry I St, PO1 2BZ. Look out for our students in purple T-shirts who'll help direct you.

If you're arriving by coach or minibus, we recommend parking on Museum Road, Portsmouth which is just outside of the Ravelin Sports Centre. For more information on checking in and how to get here, take a look at our guide to taster days page.

All sessions will be linked to your chosen language of study (French, German or Spanish), which you can choose when you book your place.

Discover Languages Taster Day

Check in from 9.15am at Park Building, King Henry I St, Portsmouth PO1 2BZ and get ready to learn about studying a Languages degree at university.

With a growing demand for translators and interpreters a degree in Languages sets you up to take on roles across a diverse range of career paths.

From Journalism and the Media to tourism, finance and marketing, you'll explore the options available to language graduates.

You'll also learn about our Initial Teacher Training in Languages pathway, giving you a fast-track to a teaching career.

Interpreting

Develop your interpreting skills at our fully-functioning conference interpreter suite in this session. You'll get hands-on with our specialist tools used for consecutive interpreting, note-taking and 'relay' interpreting to experience what lessons could look like as a Language student.

You'll attend any 1 of these sessions during this particular timeslot, and you'll get to experience all 5 sessions over the course of the day.

Translation

Take a seat at our translator booths in our Digital Language Labs. You'll experience sight translation using our Lingua interpreter units and Plixus conference networking to merge your chosen Language with the etiquette of professional meetings and conferences.

Studying and working abroad

Our students have enjoyed working in a range of countries to develop their language skills during their placement year.

Now is your chance to find out about their experiences of learning in other countries, working as teachers, translators, and as volunteers with non-governmental organisations, travelling all around the world using their languages.

Fuel-up. Feel free to bring your own lunch for the day or grab something from the cafeteria.

Language Tasters (TBC)

During your Taster Day you'll explore two new languages and unlock new opportunities in equipping you with the tools to communicate with people from different corners of the globe.

Not only will you get to learn new languages but you'll be able to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions to help catch the eye of future employers.
