Sharing Apprenticeship Pathways with Ark Charter School

As the Digital Marketing Degree Apprenticeship Course Lead, I had the pleasure of visiting Ark Charter School on Monday 9 February as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

Throughout the day, I delivered a number of talks to Year 10 students, joined by our talented BA (Hons) Digital Marketing (Degree Apprenticeship) (DMDA) apprentice, Thea Carpenter. Together, we aimed to raise awareness of degree apprenticeships and the invaluable opportunities they offer young people.

From the outset, the students were fully engaged, asking thoughtful, perceptive questions and showing a genuine interest in understanding how apprenticeships can shape future career paths. Their enthusiasm made each session rewarding and reaffirmed the importance of outreach at this stage in their educational journey.

Spotlight on Thea’s apprentice journey

A standout moment from the day was Thea’s contribution. As a current DMDA apprentice, she provided students with an authentic insight into what it truly means to pursue a degree apprenticeship.

Thea spoke about her own progression, from completing a Level 3 apprenticeship to now undertaking her Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship and reflected on how each step has supported her personal and professional growth. Her honesty and passion resonated strongly with the students, offering a relatable perspective on navigating early career choices.

It was brilliant to have the opportunity to share my own journey with the Year 10 students at the Ark Academy - it was incredibly impactful.

I was able to reflect on my progression from completing a Level 3 Apprenticeship and how it aided me in taking on my Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship. It was powerful to speak about my growth, not just in terms of my technical skills but also in my confidence, independence and career direction.

I believe my story resonated with the students, as it showed them that apprenticeships are not only a valid alternative to the traditional university routes but also a meaningful and rewarding way to learn, grow and build a career.

A positive impact already

It’s encouraging to see such immediate interest sparked among the students, proof that early exposure to apprenticeship pathways can help broaden horizons and empower young people to make informed decisions about their future.

I’ve already had several students come to me asking for more information. You both gave them so much to consider, and it was exactly the kind of impact we were hoping for.

Continuing the conversation

Engagements like this are vital in showcasing the diversity of higher education routes available today. Degree apprenticeships provide a powerful combination of academic learning and real‑world experience, and it’s always a privilege to help young people discover these opportunities.
