Vikalp has professional games design experience but knows his Master’s will open up better opportunities.
As an avid gamer, I have always been fascinated by the technology behind the video games I enjoy. From the insane physics to the fun mechanics, I wondered what goes into the making of high-profile, high-budget video games. That’s why I decided to pursue a Master’s in Computer Games Technologies.
I was working as a game designer at a startup in India. I wanted to dive deeper into my field and gain a better, mature understanding of my subject.
A postgraduate degree will open up more career prospects and opportunities for me. I will gain new skills and connections, and be able to contribute to the rapid growth of this industry.
I chose to study MRes Creative Technologies at Portsmouth for a variety of reasons. It is a unique course because it doesn't have a lot of theory, so we get more time to study independently.
A personal course exploring new skills and tech
The course is very practical and allows a lot of creative freedom.
With a pathway in Computer Games Technologies, my subject is based entirely on my personal self. We reflect on various topics that improve our critical thinking, which will be helpful long-term.
The comprehensive curriculum covers a wide range of topics not just limited to my subject, such as game design, project management and interpersonal development. I knew that a broad education in these areas would provide me with a well-rounded understanding of the industry, and help me to excel in my future career.
Tapping into industry expertise and real-world projects
The faculty and teachers have industrial experience, so I’m able to feed off their knowledge and expertise, to get a better understanding of my subject.
The facilities, hardware and software offered by the University are also industry-standard.
Another important factor was the opportunity to work on real-world projects as part of my studies. This hands-on experience has been critical in helping me to develop my technical skills and gain more understanding of the complexities of game design.
Opportunities to grow as a person at Portsmouth
I was awarded the Vice Chancellor's Global Development Scholarship - A £1,600 discount on my tuition fees.
I'm also employed with the University as a Student Ambassador, assisting a lot of other students.
The University of Portsmouth has provided me with a platform to work on myself, as well as opportunities to help others. It has given me opportunities to improve my soft skills such as communication, teamwork and confidence.
I've signed up for extracurricular courses such as Learning and Leading and Creative Skills, which have an indirect effect on my main coursework. The University has also enabled me to make friends and networks that will aid me in my future.
Feeling ready to help the games industry evolve
The gaming industry is constantly evolving, and I want to be at the helm of these changes.
I will continue working hard, so the paper and artefact I submit at the end of my course is worthy to help future students as well as the games industry.
There is a strong focus on research and the programme emphasises self-study, with constant feedback. I have the opportunity to explore new technologies and contribute to the development of innovative games.
I'm confident that this Master’s will set the framework for a successful career, whether it's working for a gaming firm or starting my own company.
So, if you are a gamer with a passion for technology and a desire to make a difference in the industry, I highly recommend this Master’s in Computer Games Technologies. You won’t regret it.
