Discover why Portsmouth is the perfect place to start your nursing journey
Nursing is more than a career; it’s a calling to make a real difference in people’s lives. At the University of Portsmouth, you’ll be supported to develop your knowledge, practical experience and professional values as you train to deliver outstanding care.
Whether you’re just starting out or ready to advance your career, our nursing courses combine real-world learning, expert teaching and a supportive community to help you reach your goals.
6 reasons to choose Portsmouth for your nursing degree
1. Learn in real healthcare settings
At Portsmouth, you’ll learn by doing. Our Centre for Simulation in Health and Care gives you a safe space to practise real nursing scenarios. We have realistic and immersive hospital wards, GP offices and home environments. This hands-on approach helps you build the skills and confidence you need before starting your real-world placements.
2. Get hands on experience with placements
Put your learning into practice through NHS and community placements with our trusted local partners, including Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and Solent NHS Trust. You’ll experience life across hospitals, clinics and community settings, which will help you build the skills and adaptability every nurse needs.
3. Learn from practising professionals
Our lecturers aren’t just academics; they’re experienced nurses and healthcare specialists who’ve worked on the front line. They’ll share real-world insight, teach you the latest in nursing practice and inspire you to make a real difference in your future career.
4. Financial and career support
At Portsmouth, we don’t want money worries getting in the way of your nursing dream. Eligible students can receive at least £5,000 a year through the NHS Learning Support Fund, helping with everyday costs while you study.
On top of that, Portsmouth offers extra support such as our Low Income, Care Leaver and Young Carer bursaries. You’ll also have access to hardship funding and one-to-one money advice from our friendly Student Finance team so you can stay focused on your studies and your future.
5. Join a supportive community
When you study nursing at Portsmouth, you’re joining more than just a course, you’re joining a community. Our Nursing Society brings students together for events, study sessions and socials, so you can connect with people who understand the journey you’re on. As well as this, you’ll find plenty of support from staff, peers and the wider university to help you thrive throughout your studies and beyond.
6. Excellent outcomes and reputation
All our undergraduate and postgraduate nursing courses are approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and endorsed by Skills for Care, so your degree meets professional standards and prepares you to register as a qualified nurse when you graduate. Access continued career support after you graduate for up to 5 years, with the potential to work with local NHS partners.
We’re proud to be ranked 7th in the UK for general nursing (Guardian University Guide, 2026). As well as in the Top 30 for student satisfaction (Times Higher Education, 2024). Plus, 93% of our nursing graduates are in work or further study 15 months after finishing their course (HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey).
