Over 40 academics from the University of Portsmouth are among the top two per cent of the most cited scholars in the world.

The list, produced by Stanford University and Elsevier, shows which academics are referenced most frequently in the work of other scholars.

The ranking methodology was developed by Stanford University professor, John Ioannidis, and is based on scientific citation data since 1788.

Professor Jeremy Howells, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and External Relations, said: “We’re very proud to see so many of our excellent academics in this list of top scholars who are the most cited in their respective areas. This recognition reflects their dedication, expertise, and the impact of their research.

“Our students are taught by many of these staff who are leaders in their field, which means they’re exposed to world-leading and internationally influential research.”

Two lists have been released - one based on career-long data and another focusing on the performance of researchers in the year 2022.
