The University's Ravelin Sports Centre and Innovation Connect spaces are features in the 20th anniversary edition of the game.
The University's award winning Ravelin Sports Centre and Innovation Connect spaces are featured in the new 20th anniversary edition of the Destination Portsmouth Board Game created by Entrepreneur in Residence and Innovation Connect member Rachel Lowe.
The taxi game takes you on a journey through the streets of Portsmouth collecting fares from attractions, landmarks and businesses. This Special Edition is 2 games in 1 with a double-sided board featuring a Day Shift AND a Night Shift.
Rachel had the idea for the game whilst working as a cab driver locally to pay her way through her Law degree at the University of Portsmouth. She entered her idea into the University Enterprise Challenge and used the cash she won to set up her first company.
Destination London and Destination Portsmouth were the first two editions to be launched. Destination London found success in Hamley’s of London, hitting the headlines when it became the store’s Christmas Number 1 best-selling product, outselling Monopoly; despite her idea being famously shot down by the Dragon’s when she appeared with her game in the very first series of BBC Dragon’s Den.
Destination Portsmouth sold out within 2 weeks of its launch locally. 20 years later Destination is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a planned roll out of the regional Destination Board Games, starting with her home town of Portsmouth.
Ravelin Sports Centre officially opened in 2022 and has already won the Public Sector Project: Design Stage Award at the BREEAM Awards 2020, and received a top rating of ‘Outstanding’ from BREEAM UK, the world’s leading sustainability assessment for building. The centre also recently won best indoor facility at the 2023 IOC IPC IAKS Architecture Prize for its sustainable and innovative design.
Innovation Connect provides office, coworking, and meeting space as well as business services for a range of local businesses, from start-ups to more established companies across four centres in Portsmouth.
Rachel is excited about the new release; “I am so very proud to have created something that shines a light on our beautiful city. Some of my fondest memories of childhood were playing board games with family. I have received so many lovely messages over the years from people who made their own memories playing the original Destination Portsmouth game. Christmas Day this year will see many locals playing the new 20th Anniversary edition. It is the perfect Christmas gift for anyone who loves their city. Thank you to anyone who has supported the project, I am very proud of this special edition.”
In addition to University locations, a total of 93 local Destinations have made it into the new edition including locations on the Day Shift such as The D-Day Story, South Parade Pier, Coffee Cup, Southsea Laser Clinic, STR Group and Portsmouth Football Club. For the Night Shift you will visit locations which include Gunwharf Quays, Southsea Brunch Klub, Giuseppe’s Restaurant, The Gaiety Southsea and Meat and Barrel.
A new feature of the Special Edition is the Golden Destination Card! There is one for each shift and these have been sponsored by Official Partners Kings Theatre and City of Portsmouth College. If you are lucky enough to pick up a Golden Destination Card you get Triple Fare and collect £300! The winner is the player with the most money at the end of the shift.
