University of Portsmouth ranked in the top 450 universities worldwide

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, published today (30 September 2026), reveals that the University has improved its position within the top 500, moving into the 401-450 bracket. 

This puts the University in the top 20% of the 2,297 institutions spanning 118 countries and territories worldwide that are included in the rankings.

Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth, said: “Being recognised once again among the world’s top universities continues to demonstrate our impressive international standing. 

"We're an ambitious, globally connected university that thrives on producing excellent research, outstanding education and productive international partnerships. 

"This result gives us further confidence as we continue to strengthen our impact and reputation internationally.”

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings offer a comprehensive tool to compare higher education institutions. They're a go-to resource for many students and academics to identify the world's top universities and understand their focus areas.

They're also used by universities to benchmark performance against global standards, give students the best experience and build international partnerships.

Data from 17 performance indicators is grouped into five key areas: teaching; research environment; research quality; international outlook; industry.  

Demonstrating excellence

The THE World University Ranking 2027 is the latest in a string of accolades that acknowledge the University's commitment:

• Top 40 UK university in the Guardian University Guide.
• Gold rating in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
• Top 3 modern UK university for research power reflecting that Portsmouth students are taught by expert lecturers and groundbreaking researchers.
• Portsmouth is home to the first dental school ever established in the South-East, and one of the first new dental schools anywhere in the country in over 20 years, following a Government announcement earlier this year. 
• The establishment of the University’s new medical degree, in partnership with King’s College London as a branch campus for medical students to train locally, with the aim to eventually open our own medical school.
• £5.8 million in OfS funding to transform the Faculty of Technology facilities including new laboratories, simulated learning environments, a satellite room for space applications and advanced renewable energy equipment to prepare the next generation of engineers and technicians.
