Promoting your research in the media

Communicating research findings to audiences beyond academia is essential to impact generation. Carefully planned media engagement can raise the profile of your research, engage audiences, change public opinion and influence change.

The University’s media and communications team can provide advice on promoting your research in the media or producing an article for publication in The Conversation. The team produces and distributes a wide range of media content including press releases, media pitches, blogs, podcasts and social media videos, and takes a proactive approach to promoting its research and researchers through local, national and international media.

All of these activities have been supported by our Press and Media team who provide dedicated media training to academics enabling them to engage with high-profile media. Being taught how to handle interviews and practising those skills is the surest way to improve both the result and alleviate much of the anxiety many people suffer when engaging with the media.

If you would like to talk to the Press and Media team about promoting your research, writing for The Conversation or to sign up for media training, please contact the team at [email protected].

Filming, interviews and media visits on campus

The University of Portsmouth is an open and welcoming community, and we're happy for visitors to spend time on our campus. We also have a responsibility to keep our students, staff and visitors safe, and to make sure teaching, research and day-to-day activity can carry on without interruption.

For this reason, anyone who would like to film, take photographs, record interviews, in University buildings or in outdoor spaces owned and managed by the University must get permission from us in advance. This applies to journalists and media organisations as well as members of the public.

Please email the Press Office at [email protected] with details of what you're planning, including the date, time, location and purpose of your visit. We ask for as much notice as possible.

Once your visit is agreed, a member of University staff will be on hand to meet you and accompany you while you're on site. This helps things run smoothly and keeps disruption to a minimum.

Our campus is private property. Anyone filming, recording or carrying out any of the activities above without permission, or without a University guide, may be asked to leave.

If you're a member of staff or a student expecting visitors for any of these purposes, please let the Press Office know beforehand.
