Our International Student Ambassadors have compiled a range of helpful advice on language, culture and city life.
We hope these insights will help you to navigate life as an international student with ease and learn how to make your stay in Portsmouth as amazing as possible.
Lee-Anne Russell
- Attend as many social events hosted by the University during early weeks, especially International Orientation, to meet new people and get comfortable with the environment before starting classes
- If you aren't sure about something, don't be afraid to ask. I know we all come from different cultures but in England, asking is so welcome
- Always ask about a student discount!
Syed Waseeque
- If you're studying a Master's degree, as it’s only a one year degree, start looking for relevant jobs and read job descriptions. You can learn the skills required by some employers using LinkedIn learning which is provided by the University alongside with your studies
- If you are more into the academic side of things, try to find relevant professors and start working on writing a research paper (even try to publish one if you are studying a taught Master's); don't wait for dissertation time. This will help you get a scholarship for a PhD or getting a research/teaching assistant job
Juyun Han (Jénet)
- If you're from a warm country or easily feel cold, don't forget to bring an electric blanket or buy one when you arrive in the UK
- The weather can often be changeable in the UK, so it's useful to have an umbrella. However, Portsmouth can be very windy so wait until you're here to buy one and don't spend too much money on one
- Try to meet other international students because they will share their experience which will help you a lot

- Put yourself out there; join societies and attend events organised by the University. They really help you find new friends as you'll share things in common. It will help you to adapt to the new city once you find new friends with similar interests.
Rossy De Los Santos
- Make sure you book an appointment for your BRP collection (if you need one), open a bank account, register with a Doctor (GP), and of course, enjoy the city!
Ritah Namaganda
- If you are travelling alone, take the coach instead of the train to Portsmouth. It will make travelling with your luggage easier. The National Express coach service runs a direct coach to Portsmouth from both London Heathrow and Gatwick airports. You can also take advantage of the Airport Pick Up service offered by the University which will take you directly to your accommodation in Portsmouth (if you are in Halls of Residence)
- Make sure you get a National Railcard for discounted travel on UK trains. You can get application forms from any railway station or download one online
- During International Orientation take the University campus and city tours to familiarise yourself with where things are
- Attend the Info Fair and Freshers Fair and pick up a few freebies and meet new friends. Join a club or society; it's a great way to make friends too
- If you want to learn a new language, you can do this for free at the University, but make sure you sign up early so you have access to learning resources

- Attend the International Orientation programme! It will give you an opportunity to meet new people in a new environment and this will be very beneficial when you first arrive in Portsmouth
- Take advantage of student discount opportunities in local stores around the city and sign up for UniDays discount portal
- Do not be shy about asking questions. Most students are likely to understand your situation and will happily point you in the right direction
Jahera Zarin Purne
- Navigating and locating yourself is essential when you move to a new place. Get familiar with Google maps or any other map application to save time!
Ifunanyachukwu Newton Okwuoha
- Have an open mind. You are coming to a different country and a city that has loads of different cultures
- Be proactive and not reactive
- Always ask questions. Do not be shy!
- Make sure you have all your necessities taken care of once you arrive. Get your BRP card, student card and open a bank account
- Get to know your environment and explore your new surroundings
