In this session you'll meet the course leader who will give you a overview of what you would study in your foundation year. You will then be taken to your taster session where you will experience what life as a student at Portsmouth would be like. You'll meet your future lecturers as well as current students on the course, and take part in a hands on activity to give you a flavour of what studying on this course would look like.

In this session you will experience what life as a Mathematics student at Portsmouth would be like. You'll meet your future lecturers as well as current students on the course, and take part in hands-on activities to give you a flavour of what studying on this course would look like.
You will take part in a taster of differential equations: in this activity we will see how to build on the simple differential equations you know from your A-level to look at more complex systems of equations, and some of the many real world applications.
You will also take a first look at how mathematical models can be used to make predictions using data. When building models it is very useful to visualize their predictions on a computer, and this will form part of the session.

First you'll get the opportunity to setup and take measurements using the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) which is used for the surface characterisation of micro and nanostructures, followed by a demonstration of the Magnetron plasma sputtering system which is used for the synthesis of nanomaterials. You will also take part in demonstration to understand cosmological and astrophysical events such as gravitational waves and galaxy distributions.
