Biography

I am a Principal Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Portsmouth, where I am Subject Area Leader for PG programmes, contributing to the MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL in particular.

I have been involved in teacher education for many years, including both pre-service and in-service programmes and my main research interests relate to ELT methodology, teacher education and materials writing. I have been invited to speak at conferences and events around the world on these topics. 

My publications include Reading in Self-access Material: What Can We Learn from Self-instructed Learners and Their Reported Experience? The Reading Matrix, 22/1 (with Alessandra Belletti Figueira Mulling), Extensive reading at primary level (Cambridge University Press, 2018), Extensive reading in ELT: Why and how? (Cambridge University Press, 2018, Teaching and Developing Reading Skills (Cambridge University Press, 2017), Learning to Teach English (Delta Publishing, second edition 2014, first edition 2005), Cambridge English Teacher: Vocabulary and Pronunciation (Cambridge University Press, 2012), The CELTA Course Trainee Book and The CELTA Course Trainer’s Manual (both co-authored with Scott Thornbury, Cambridge University Press, 2007).
