Understandably, you have lots of things to consider when your child stays away from home.
They may be excited, anxious, or a mixture of the two. This page aims to answer any questions you may have and to ease any nerves ahead of the Residential.
Parent briefing talk
Missed the briefing evening in your school? Catch up on everything we covered here
Speaker 1: [00:00:00] Hello everyone, my name is Kayleigh and I work at the University of Portsmouth within the Outreach team and it is my pleasure to be organising the residential for this year. So we've just put this together if you couldn't make the preparation evenings within the schools then this is what I show to everyone so hopefully you won't miss out on anything but we do understand it's quite difficult to get out especially around some of the times that some of these meetings are on so hopefully this will fill in all of the blanks for you but obviously you can get in contact if you need anything. These are the sorts of things that we'll cover within this presentation. So just all of the basics and the things that you really must know about. So the residential is over two days. We usually have around 100 students descend upon us from all of the local schools. So we do some sessions together, get to know each other. I like to do some cringy icebreakers just to make everything really awkward. But then they get over it. And then we will do some sports sessions in the afternoon on Monday. And your students will make choices about what they'd like to do in those two sessions. Then the most important bit in the evening on Monday we have a disco so we do advise bring your glad rags if you want to get dressed up however a little bit of a warning it is going to be about a 20 minute walk to and from the venue so no stilettos let's just be sensible They're not in anyway, so let's not try it. Then we will all stay in Rees halls and everyone has their own room and I'll discuss more about that in a bit. Then we have some breakfast together in the morning, which is really nice and they can gossip about everything that happened at the disco. Then we do some academic workshops which again you will get to choose and then after that we come together and we have a giant celebration ceremony and that is really the pinnacle of the entire two days. So your important information. The big one is please arrive in sportswear on day one because the suitcases that you bring will be locked away and you won't have access to them until right at the end of that day. So you must arrive in your sportswear including trainers. All food and snacks are provided. You are allowed to bring your snacks if you want to but we do ask please know not based products, we have some severe allergic reactions to that one so please don't bring anything just in case. No one needs to bring any money, there's not going to be any opportunity to use money, we will provide everything that is needed. You young people are more than welcome to bring phones or tablets or other electronics but they will have to look after them themselves, carry them if they choose to take them with them so if anything goes wrong there's not a lot that we can do we will obviously try to help but yeah it's down to their own responsibility. And we do have similar rules to the schools in that you won't be able to use your phones or tablets and things during workshops and activities and to be perfectly honest with you, it is such a full on two days, there's probably not going to be a lot of time to be using them. Even when we get back after the disco, some of you may think that you'd like to sit and watch a film or something, but I guarantee you will be really tired and you're just going to fall asleep straight away. All of our rooms are individual, they each will have a little ensuite bathroom with a shower inside and a desk in case you desperately need to get any homework done, we can help you with that. All of the floors will be slip by gender and you will have bedding, a hand and bath towel within those rooms so you don't need to bring anything like that. The serious bits so students aren't going to be allowed to leave the university site during the residential they will be with us and our student ambassadors they will be supervised at all times so they're not going to be able to pop off downtown to go to Primark they will have to stay with us. We do say please no smoking or vaping or e-cigarettes or alcohol, none of that please. I have got a really strong nose so I will be able to tell if you've been vaping for candy floss air, so just don't bother doing it. Any abusive or antisocial behaviour towards other students or staff will not be tolerated. We're not like the schools, we don't have to give second chances. We will just ask people to take them home straight away, okay? But I'm sure nothing will go wrong, it'll be fine. Accommodation is split by gender and students will only have access to the floor that their room is on. And we try to group them with their schools so they'll be neighbours with people from their schools that they won't be allowed to go up and down onto the different floors. But there are common spaces available if they want to hang out with different people. And then finally, once lights out have been called, students do need to make sure that they're in their own rooms, they're only single beds, so they're not going to be able to have sleepovers with their mates. And they do just need to get going and get to bed because it's quite an early start the next day as well. Okay getting to the residential will vary depending on your school. Some will be taken by minibus and your schools will tell you what time to get to the school for them to bring you to us. Some of you will meet a teacher at the venue so they'll be standing waiting for you to register you. Some of you are going to make your own way to the venue as well. This year we're going to check in at a place called St Paul's. Postcode is there on the screen. The arrival window begins at 8.30 and we ask for all students to have arrived by 9am at the latest. Please do google where St Pauls is. It's on a tiny little one-way road deep in our campus so please have look to see where that is. And then packing, so we do say one small bag or suitcase that you can comfortably manage. That's because we will be travelling and asking you to bring your suitcase from one part of the campus to another. Okay, so I would say it's probably gonna be about a 20 minute walk. So you do need to make sure that you can carry it. If you've got one on wheels, that's probably the best bet. But yeah, so be careful when you're packing to make that you are gonna be able to carry it yourself. With that in mind, you do need to make sure that you bring enough comfortable clothes and shoes. We are going to do a lot of walking back and forth to all of the buildings, so do make sure you're comfortable. Okay, definitely trainers are a must for this one, but you might want to wear your little step counter because you are going wrap up the steps. Please make sure that you bring appropriate sleepwear. Me. I'm sure you've all heard of those rumours of the student halls where someone burns a piece of toast at two o'clock in the morning, everyone has to leave the building. That is the same for this halls of residence, so even though it's June-July, it's the UK, it still going to be cold at night, so just make sure that you've got enough to cover you to keep you warm just in case that ever happens. Please do bring your own toiletries. So you won't find shower gel or shampoo within the room. So bring your rain for that one. And my top tip is bring either hand wash or hand sanitizer because that's not in the rooms, okay. If anyone needs any medication we will speak to people at home anyway to make sure that we know what's going on with medication but anything that you've got please can you clearly label it with the name and the dosage that includes basic things like hay fever tablets but just so we know who's got what. You might want to bring hair dryer or straighteners because they're not provided in the rooms and if you want to get dolled up for the disco it's worth speaking to the other students that are going on the trip because it might be that you guys can all share instead one person bring one one person brings something else. The next two, it really all depends on what the British weather is going to do, so either a waterproof coat if it's looking like it's going to be rainy or sun cream if it is looking like it is going be hot. If it's a weather warning then we will email you out again and really push to recommend what you need to bring with you. But you know what it's like, prepare for everything for our weather. As you said before all meals and snacks are provided but some students might wish to bring their own. We've had people in the past where they would only eat pot noodles so they bought their own pot noodles with them and that's fine we can accommodate and help with that one. So yeah if you need to bring anything of your own even if they're dietary or medical please do so but just make sure that you're okay to carry them. But I will say I am a very fussy eater and I've always managed to eat at every meal at the residential so I think it'll be fine. Please do consider practicalities, so whether or not things will melt, that sort of thing, and then the dietary requirements of others so again please no nut-based foods. We will provide all of the bedding, a hand and a bath towel, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in between. We'll give everyone a pen, a pencil and a notebook for workshop, so you don't need to bring a pencil case or anything. We will give everyone water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the stay and if you want to bring another one then that's absolutely fine. And then we'll give you a little string bag to hold it all in when we're walking around the campus and then everyone's going to have a lanyard and that will have key information within it and then a key to their room. And then finally, the celebration ceremony. So we say, can you arrive from five? And between five and 5.30, we will provide cakes and snacks and sweet treats for all of the families that want to come. And then by half past five the rest of the young people will arrive and we'll go up to one of the giant lecture theatres in the Eldon building and then we will talk about everything that they've done and hopefully I'll be able to share some videos and some photos of what they've been up to. It's not a dead start at five o'clock so if you do need to arrive slightly later then that's absolutely fine half past 5 is when we move on up to the lecture theatre. If you haven't done so already, please could you let us know how, if you're coming to the celebration ceremony because that also lets us know how the young people are getting home, okay? And then we'll contact you if you can't make it just so that we can figure out how to make sure that your young person is safe. And then this is for the day. So we hopefully had a photograph of everyone that's involved. This is purely for our benefit so that we can put faces to names. Okay, so if you didn't attend the celebration ceremony, please would be able to scan the photo consent form, which is the top one, just to let us know if we are allowed to take photos. It's really important that we get that done. So if you could do that, that'd be fabulous. Then I asked the young people to make their choices on what sports and academic sessions they wanted to do. If you didn't manage to attend that is either going to be given to you via your careers lead within school or I have emailed it to you. Okay so if you could fill that out as soon as possible and then I can get a timetable ready and going. However, if your young person decides they want to do climbing and they put that down as an option on that form, would you please then be able to scan the bottom QR code, putting in their name? That is it. We will send you emails for both students and for parents and guardians as we go up to it and that will allow you to have access to a separate part of the website which has got frequently asked questions and we'll put up on there your travel details that the school have told us about okay. And then finally if you do need anything please do not hesitate to contact us. We have given an email address and that is that will come through onto the emails that we send you. Okay so thank you very much and we're really looking forward to seeing everybody. [00:00:00][0.0]
FAQs
The UP for Uni Residential offers students an insight into university life, but it’s so much more than that! This experience is a chance to build friendships, develop independence, improve self-confidence and try new things.
Together with UoP student ambassadors and other Year 10 pupils from local secondary schools, students will take part in a packed schedule of activities all designed to help them explore future options and the pathways available to them in higher education.
Monday 30 June to Tuesday 1 July
Daytime activities take place in the University of Portsmouth buildings. Overnight, students will stay in Rees Hall, one of the University’s halls of residence.

We want all young people attending the residential to have an enjoyable and safe experience. We therefore have a residential code of conduct which we expect all attendees to follow:
For health and safety reasons and to ensure that all young people have the opportunity to benefit from and enjoy the residential, the following rules will be in operation:
- Young people are expected to take part in all timetabled activities and are not allowed to leave the university site during their visit.
- Young people are expected to follow any emergency procedures, such as fire drills, as directed by University staff.
- Smoking and vaping are not permitted (including e-cigarettes).
- There is a strict no-alcohol policy at the residential. This applies to both participants and staff.
- The possession, sale, purchase or use of any illegal substances is strictly forbidden. The misuse of any other substances will not be tolerated.
- Young people should not involve themselves in dangerous activities that might cause injury.
- No one should engage in abusive or anti-social behaviour towards other young people, staff or students at the university.
- All instructions from staff and ambassadors should be listened to and followed accordingly at all times.
Overnight stay
- Accommodation will be split by gender, students will only be able to access the floor that their room is on (they will have access to common spaces should they wish to meet with other students not staying on their floor).
- Students will be given a cut-off/’lights-out’ time after which they can only be in their own room. Students may not enter friend’s rooms after this point.
- Each individual participant will have a key to their own, en-suite room and therefore will be expected to keep to their own accommodation areas.
- No members of the general public or non-residential staff will be permitted in the accommodation areas.
Serious misconduct or breach of rules
It is expected that the residential will be free from serious misconduct or breach of the rules. However, in the event that it does occur, the young person/people concerned will not be allowed to continue and arrangements will be made for them to be collected from the residential. In this instance, the young person’s family or school will cover the cost of any transport.
