Our Taster Days help you to explore some of the best facilities in the country – including high-performance computing labs, usability labs with eye-tracking equipment, and forensics labs.

Study Computing at Portsmouth
This is one of the flagship labs in the whole university.
All of our course team work with students for more than 20 years.
We have all sorts of experience that you need.
The university constantly puts lots of investment to upgrade all the state of the art Cisco devices.
You can touch them, you can configure them, you can learn how it works.
On top of that this course is also a member of Cisco Network Academy, as well as a VMware I.T. Academy.
So we give you the chance of pursuing an excellent degree as well as professional certificates, plus we do have our very own cloud service.
You will learn everything about the cloud and then you will build your own cloud with us.
We will open the door for you and we will hopefully welcome you very soon.
At our Computing Taster, you'll:
- Fully immerse yourself in our studios and labs to see different technologies in action
- Explore different areas of Computing, including Computer Networks, Databases and Cybersecurity
- Discover the highly-rewarding career pathways, industries and job roles waiting for you with a degree in Computing
- Find out about transferable skills you’ll develop during your studies that will make you highly employable
- Learn about doing a placement year as part of your degree to gain valuable work experience before you graduate – previous students have worked for IBM, BAE, Lilly, CDW UK and Jagex
- Chat with current students about life as a student at Portsmouth and the different Computing courses they study
- Gain useful experience that you can talk about on your UCAS personal statement, showing your passion for Computing

Raspberry Pi Minecraft Game*
Consider the advances in technology over the years – from game consoles and smartphones to drones and self-driving cars. A common requirement for all is that they all need the Internet.
That's why the role of network engineers is crucial. As we become increasingly reliant on faster, more intelligent networking, Computer Networks plays a vital role in all aspects of businesses, governments, and public services. Not surprisingly, computer network specialists are highly sought by the industry, working with a wide range of projects and clients.
So get ready to practice with Internetwork IP addressing, Domain Name Systems, principles of gaming servers, and services using a subnet of networked Raspberry PIs.

Problem-solving with LEGO*
When last did you solve a problem by playing with LEGO? Take part in a hands-on LEGO workshop where you'll need to find creative solutions, a skill vital in our Computing courses. Taking on real-life challenges and considering bigger societal problems, you'll share creations with fellow attendees in a friendly environment to explore your creative thinking processes.

Databases: 'Finding Janette'
Get hands-on data samples as you query a real database.
In small groups, you'll be given a stack of printouts with sample data with clues to follow 'Janette's journey'. Aiming to create some order with the information, you'll then correlate the data by comparing and connecting the data available, as you aim to locate the mysterious Janette.
This activity will give you a better understanding of how data is organised and connected, while also letting you sharpen your analytical skills.

With cyber-attacks becoming increasingly sophisticated, the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals is on the rise.
