At our Computing Taster Day on 26 March 2024, you'll explore a wide range of courses, from networking with Raspberry Pi to addressing digital security breaches – all while gaining hands-on experience in our facilities, such as our Cyber Security and Digital Forensics Laboratory.

Study Computing at Portsmouth

This is one of the flagship labs in the whole university.

All of our course team work with students for more than 20 years.

We have all sorts of experience that you need.

The university constantly puts lots of investment to upgrade all the state of the art Cisco devices.

You can touch them, you can configure them, you can learn how it works.

On top of that this course is also a member of Cisco Network Academy, as well as a VMware I.T. Academy.

So we give you the chance of pursuing an excellent degree as well as professional certificates, plus we do have our very own cloud service.

You will learn everything about the cloud and then you will build your own cloud with us.

We will open the door for you and we will hopefully welcome you very soon.

At our Computing Taster, you'll:

  • Investigate different areas of Computing, including databases, IP addresses and the principles of gaming services.
  • Discover how the role of technology can support managerial and operational practices of a business.
  • Tour Laboratories that simulate professional digital forensics and cybersecurity environments to analyse digital evidence.
  • Learn about graduate destinations – from BAE systems and Barclays to Fujitsu and JP Morgan.
  • Uncover placement opportunities to gain valuable work experience to set you up for after you Graduate – previous students have worked for IBM, CDW UK and Jagex.
  • Chat with current students about life as a student at Portsmouth and the different Computing courses they study.
  • Gain useful experience that you can talk about on your UCAS personal statement, showing your passion for Computing.
  • Learn about Connected Degrees at Portsmouth, the only UK uni to offer a three-year course with 4th year placement.

Taster Day location and meeting point

We'll meet at Anglesea Building, Anglesea Rd, PO1 3DJ. Look out for our students in purple T-shirts who'll help direct you.

Networking with Raspberry Pis

From game consoles and smartphones to drones and self-driving cars; there's one thing they all need - the internet.

That's why the role of the network engineer is crucial as we become more reliant and faster and more intelligent networking. Computer Networks play a virtual part in all aspects of life; in businesses, governments and public services. Computer Network Specialists are highly sought after in the industry and will work on a variety of projects with a multitude of clients.

Get ready to practice with Interwork Internetwork IP addressing, Domain Name Systems, principles of gaming servers, and services using a subnet of networked Raspberry PIs.

Cybersecurity: The fight against Cybercrime

Digital Security breaches have the capability to bring down banks, hospital and governments - but you can help combat cybercrime.

Cyber-attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals is on the rise. 

This session shows how cyber security isn't just about protecting external threats - but also how to keep systems secure and resilient from within.

Databases Unlocked: The Logic of Databases in Today's Tech World

Databases are the powerhouses behind your favourite social media platforms and online services.

This session will set you a Database Design Challenge and give you a chance to take on the role of data engineer; can you work out how databases make the digital world tick?

Computing can open the door to a huge range of careers and encompasses everything from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity - it really depends on where you want to go.

As the world relies more and more on technology, the job market for careers in Computing has increased.
