The Molecular Beam Epitaxy machine produces high quality crystals by firing beams of molecules on top of a substrate (base layer), slowly building up ultra-thin layers to create the crystal.

The flawless crystals can be used as semiconductors in science and industry (e.g. as semiconductor lasers in medicine and in advanced computer chips).

Students on the following courses use this lab: BSc (Hons)/MPhys (Hons) PhysicsBSc (Hons)/MPhys (Hons) Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmolog, and PhD students.

Two students converse in the Molecular Beam Epitaxy Laboratory

Students use the OCI Molecular Beam Epitaxy System

Equipment

  • OCI Molecular Beam Epitaxy System with Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED)
  • Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), equipped with 6 effusion cells and the ability to stack atoms and molecules to create a complex surface
