A car-free vision for the City is being presented at the University of Portsmouth tomorrow (6 June).

‘Traffic Removal for Transforming City Centres’ is a joint event between the University and Traffic Removal UK.

The free event is open to the public and is led by Professor Djamila Ouelhadj, Director of the Intelligent Transport Research Cluster. It is an opportunity to hear how traffic removal tools can be used to deliver liveable cities free of traffic.

It will feature speakers from across the south of England, including:

  • Steve Melia and Ian Shergold from the University of the West of England;
  • Richard Pearson from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council;
  • Megan Streb from Sustrans;
  • Randall Ghent from Act TravelWise.

They will be discussing issues such as the evidence behind traffic removal, the politics of pedestrianisation, the transformation of our city centres and the benefits to local businesses following pedestrian improvements.

Professor Djamila Ouelhadj said: “It is my ambition to work with Portsmouth City Council and colleagues in the Intelligent Transport Research Cluster to build liveable cities free of cars with much nicer and greener public spaces in the heart of the city and better air quality.”

The event is from 2 to 5pm in the University’s Future Technology Centre. To attend, please book your place at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/liveable-city-centres-an-event-by-traffic-removal-uk-tickets-61088373971
