The University of Portsmouth has today (22 January) launched its new Student Impact Awards to recognise the achievements of its students and alumni and their contribution to the city and wider region.

The awards, which are organised in partnership with the University’s Students' Union, aim to demonstrate the positive impact our students have had on student life and community projects and with external organisations.

They will recognise students involved in activities related to their studies or extracurricular activities such as clubs or societies, volunteering, fundraising, starting a new business – or contributing to a business or organisation as a placement student, graduate employee or through a project. Off-campus activities could be local, national or international.

There are 14 categories and each one is tailored to acknowledge different forms of civic contribution, emphasising the diverse ways students can positively impact their community and beyond.

These awards will also support the University’s civic mission, including promotion and encouragement of student volunteering and encouraging collaborative activities between the University and organisations in our region, which demonstrate how we are actively contributing to the economic, social, and cultural vitality of our community.

Professor Anne Murphy, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education)

Professor Anne Murphy, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), said: “Our students make countless positive contributions to society every year, and these awards are just one way for us to celebrate them.

“These awards will also support the University’s civic mission, including promotion and encouragement of student volunteering and encouraging collaborative activities between the University and organisations in our region, which demonstrate how we are actively contributing to the economic, social, and cultural vitality of our community.”

Any University student or graduate can be nominated, either as an individual or as a member of a group. Students will be encouraged to nominate and self-nominate for awards and nominations can also come from members of the community, employers, voluntary organisations and members of staff.

Judges will look for evidence of how the nominated students have had a positive impact outside of the University while studying with us, and how they have contributed positively to the city, local region or further afield.

Each category will have a winner and a runner up selected by a review panel and announced at the Student Impact Awards evening on Tuesday 30 April at the University’s Ravelin Sports Centre. The judging panel is made up of members from the University Executive Board, local dignitaries, and academic colleagues. Winners will receive a commemorative trophy, with winners and runners-up receiving printed certificates. Shortlisted students receive a digital certificate and a badge award.

Nominees will be shortlisted in each award category after nominations close on Wednesday 13 March. Make your nomination at: port.ac.uk/StudentImpactAwards
