The University of Portsmouth has been named as one of the UK’s top 50 universities, according to the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings released today.

Portsmouth was placed 50th of all UK universities in the rankings and at 502 in the world, rising over 200 places from a position of 701-750 in last year’s Rankings.

The QS World University Ranking, produced by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, relies heavily on reputation surveys conducted with academics and employers, plus research metrics including citations.

Portsmouth’s improved position reflects its strengths across a number of areas, including its  profile, presence and reputation as an international institution home to over 6,000 international students from 150 countries and a track record of worldwide collaboration in research, teaching and innovation. Portsmouth is growing its international profile and networks for globally important research initiatives, such as Revolution Plastics and Mission Space.

Our excellent performance in this internationally recognised and important league table demonstrates our continued progress towards our long-term ambition to be the top modern UK university and in the top 100 young universities in the world by the end of the decade.

Portsmouth’s success in this research-focused ranking also reflects its growing reputation through the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), where the University was ranked third of all modern post-92 universities in the UK for research power.

Professor Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth, said: “Our excellent performance in this internationally recognised and important league table demonstrates our continued progress towards our long-term ambition to be the top modern UK university and in the top 100 young universities in the world by the end of the decade.”

This latest ranking success follows Portsmouth recently reclaiming its top 50 place in this year’s Complete University Guide. Portsmouth was ranked 47th, up 22 places from 69th in last year’s league table. This position reflects a major increase in student satisfaction, where the University is now ranked 35th in the UK - confirming its commitment to ensuring that every student has a life-changing experience with Portsmouth.
