The University of Portsmouth has been accredited by the Department of Education to deliver initial teacher training (ITT) under the UK Government’s new framework from 2024.
Under reforms announced last year, all ITT providers have to apply for re-accreditation to continue providing training from 2024.
Portsmouth was one of only 80 providers to be approved in the first round and only 40 per cent of applications were successful.
The University offers a range of ITT courses from primary and secondary school teacher training to further education teacher training, all of which are rated ‘good’ or 'outstanding' by Ofsted. The courses offer students hands-on experience through placements, thanks to over 150 well-established partnerships with schools and colleges across the South of England, providing them with the skills and knowledge to become a teacher.
We are looking forward to working with the DfE and partners to be ready to offer newly accredited courses from 2024. In the meantime, we will continue to train the next generation of teachers for Portsmouth and the region.

Portsmouth has many educational challenges to face and this recognition will allow us to continue to have a significant impact on the educational attainment of young people in our local communities.”
The new framework will ensure greater consistency in ITT provision across the sector. The re-accreditation process required the University to submit evidence as to how it would meet the new requirements including mentor training, growing partnerships and the quality of the training curriculum.

From September, the University is launching a new undergraduate degree programme in primary education, where students work towards achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) while they achieve a degree.
The University is also funding a £1,000 bursary for students who start the PGCE Primary and PGCE English training courses from September 2022.
