The University is proudly sponsoring Portsmouth Pride again this year after committing to a two year sponsorship agreement in partnership with the Students’ Union.

The free event, which aims to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ equality through entertainment and community engagement, is taking place on Castle Field in Southsea on Saturday 20 June and will see a number of acts perform throughout the day.

The 2019 event, which was also sponsored by the University, saw the biggest Pride event to date in Portsmouth with around 4,500 people, with amazing performances from local musicians, drag performers and the Portsmouth Pride Youth Society (PPYS).

As a Platinum Sponsor, the University will also support the Pride committee, which includes past and current students, and provide meeting/training spaces throughout the year in order to help them expand and grow their activities.

As a University, we share Portsmouth Pride’s ethos of valuing equality and diversity. I’m delighted we can support a local event that showcases this ethos in our city and provides an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate, not only LGBTQ+ equality but respect and inclusion across all our communities.

Tom Plant, the Students' Union Vice President of Activities, is organising a Pride event at the SU. He said: “Portsmouth Pride is an amazing event which the Union is really proud to support. Inclusivity is very important to us, and so in addition to sponsoring Pride, along with the LGBTQ+ Group, we have also organised a Pride Night here at the Union to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month. The event will be on Monday 24 February in Third Space from 6.30pm and all the events can be found on our website.”

Staff and students can check Portsmouth Pride’s website for volunteering opportunities or if you would like to support the University stand on the day, email equality@port.ac.uk.

Staff might also be interested to join the University's LGBTQ Staff Network. It runs through a closed Google+  Community and is open to any member of staff to join.
