The University of Portsmouth and Airbus have partnered with the Careers & Enterprise Company and Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to help young people to prepare for the fast-changing world of work.

By signing up to become a ‘Cornerstone Employer’ they have committed to investing time and resources to support schools and colleges from across the Solent area with their careers education, inspiring the future workforce.

Cornerstone Employers act as champions to encourage new businesses in the area to get involved in supporting schools and colleges.

Young people who have regular, meaningful interactions with employers while at school are less likely to be NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) when they finish their education.

The University of Portsmouth is proud to support the Solent East Careers Hub and become a Cornerstone Employer. We hope through our staff, our students and our work we can practically contribute, to ensure all young people have the opportunities they need to be prepared and inspired for the world of work.

The University of Portsmouth and Airbus will work closely with The Careers & Enterprise Company and the Solent LEP's Enterprise Adviser Network - volunteers from the world of business who are each matched to a local school to support their careers activity - to ensure that young people gain the vital experiences of the workplace they need to help them make informed choices about their futures.

Julia Hughes, Head of Employability at the University of Portsmouth, said: “The University of Portsmouth is proud to support the Solent East Careers Hub and become a Cornerstone Employer. We hope through our staff, our students and our work we can practically contribute, to ensure all young people have the opportunities they need to be prepared and inspired for the world of work.”

Roy Haworth, Engineering Manager at Airbus, said: “As one of the region’s leading employers we are committed to investing in the future and helping the next generation prepare for the world of work.  By becoming a Cornerstone Employer we will extend our links with schools and colleges to help young people to see the exciting opportunities that exist within the UK’s space industry.”

Claudia Harris, CEO at The Careers & Enterprise Company, said: “We are delighted that Airbus and the University of Portsmouth have decided to become Cornerstone Employers in the Solent East Careers Hub. All young people deserve great careers education, to inspire them, support their aspirations and prepare them for the fast-changing world of work.”
