Department

School of Civil Engineering and Surveying

Start dates

October, February and April

Application deadline

Applications accepted all year round

Applications are invited for a self-funded, 3 year full-time PhD project.

The PhD will be based in the School of Civil Engineering and will be supervised by Dr Elyas Zanjani.

The work on this project will include:

  • Identification of suitable mining tailings to be used in concrete
  • Experimental studies on the effect of mining tailings on the fresh and hardened concrete properties
  • Providing solutions and recommendations for greener, stronger and cheaper concrete

Concrete as the most widely used man-made material has a significant impact on the global CO2 emission (approximately 8%). Mining is also the world’s largest waste generator and mining tailings with 10-15 billion tons a year represent the highest volume residues on the Earth. These two industries are indispensable parts of today’s developments. However, linking these by reusing mining by-products as cement and aggregate replacements in order to reduce the environmental impact of both industries, optimise the mechanical performance of concrete and minimise the cost of concrete could result in a significant outcome.

Fees and funding

Some PhD projects may include additional fees – known as bench fees – for equipment and other consumables, and these will be added to your standard tuition fee. Speak to the supervisory team during your interview about any additional fees you may have to pay. Please note, bench fees are not eligible for discounts and are non-refundable.

Entry requirements

You’ll have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Civil Engineering or Mining Engineering. You'll need a good first degree from an internationally recognised university or a Master’s degree in an appropriate subject. In exceptional cases, we may consider equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications.

English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.
