Economics and Finance Subject Group
Economics and finance impacts almost every element of our modern lives. From the policies enacted by governments to the purchasing decisions we make on the high street, the success of the global economy depends on our understanding of these two subjects.T
Our academic staff are experts within their respective areas and many have extensive industry experience. Our applied research work also feeds directly into our teaching, and our students are able to gain the most up-to-date and relevant skills demanded by the industry, and develop an understanding of how to apply them.
We're a Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI)-recognised Centre for Excellence for finance teaching, and many of our alumni have gone onto successful careers in the fields in the financial and economic sectors around the world.
For more than 40 years, we've also been offering regular talks and seminars presented by leaders in the field, both from the University and from other expert institutions internationally.

Our Economics research includes the use of mathematical models to predict how people make decisions and laboratory experiments to test our predictions. We also use econometric methods to analyse field data to understand, for example, what determines the efficiency of energy production or how the economy reacts to events such as the 2008 financial crisis.
We use insights from our research to suggest how governments could better regulate the use of natural resources or risk taking by banks, develop more effective monetary policies (such as interest rate changes), and legislate to influence people’s economic decisions and improve the overall economic outcome.
Through our Finance research, we're transforming our knowledge into research that's making an impact. We're exploring how finance impacts everything from the health of the global economy to the wellbeing of individual citizens, and guarding against a repeat of recent financial crises by studying both their causes and the effects they have on almost every level of society.
We use a range of methodologies in our research – from mathematical models to testing ideas in the laboratory – and by using a variety of approaches, we're able to develop a broader understanding of the intricacies of the economics and finance field.
We examine how economics influences the preservation and sustainability of natural resources such as aquatic ecosystems.
We investigate how psychological, emotional and social factors affect economic decision-making.
Through our research in this area, we're identifying inefficiency and its causes in specific sectors.
Our banking and financial markets research examines the functioning of financial markets and the institutions that operate in those markets.
We're working to improve our understanding of asset pricing in capital markets, especially in relation to the performance of Initial Public Offerings.
