Getting a degree unlocks doors to exciting careers and opportunities. And your students are more likely to have higher salaries within their careers if they have a degree.

Holding a professional degree is essential for entering careers, such as nursing or architecture, and progressing along these career paths. And crucially, university also offers a safe space for students to make mistakes, learn from them, and perfect their skills before working with real patients or clients.

Regardless of the type of the work they eventually do, studying at university gives all students the opportunity to learn and practise the skills necessary in their chosen profession, so that they can walk into a role with knowledge and confidence after graduation.

Work experience

At university, your students will have lots of opportunities throughout their degree to get work experience and improve their employability skills.

If enhancing their CV and work experience is important to them, then have them keep this in mind while they're evaluating a course.

Students pursuing professional degrees often have integrated placements as part of their coursework. These placements provide them with real-world skills and experience while being supervised, preparing them for future roles.

Other students in different courses can choose to take a placement year, also known as a sandwich year. Placement years give students practical experience that they can highlight in job applications and interviews after graduation, while also earning a salary. Many students even receive job offers from the companies or organisations where they completed their placements.

University is a great place to make contacts that will help your students to build their future. Many students decide to join societies, volunteer, or work part-time while studying.

Lots of courses also have links to industry, with networking opportunities and the ability to work on real-client projects. These activities help them develop social and interpersonal skills, including organisational abilities and professionalism. Such skills and experiences prove valuable as they prepare to enter the workforce after graduation.

Students will also mix with other students on their course, or on other courses which complement their career goals. These relationships can come in useful in future, when your students have graduated and are entering the world of work, and later on in their careers.

Supportive teaching staff

Your students will get a dedicated tutor who will support them through their time at university. So whether they are struggling with a deadline, or are having personal issues, support is just an email or face-to-face meeting away.

At Portsmouth, students can also visit their lecturers in their office hours, to get support with any module-specific questions or issues.
