Find the best course for you

Following the UK Government announcement on revised A level grades and changes to BTEC grades, the University of Portsmouth will honour all existing offers on all programmes that do not have a specific cap on entry levels for 2020 entry.

If you've already confirmed your place with us or you've received an offer from us through Clearing or Adjustment, your place is secure and we look forward to welcoming you here this autumn.

If you now meet our offer to study on a course with a specific cap (such as some healthcare courses) based on your centre-assessed grades or revised BTEC grades, but do not yet have a place confirmed, we aim to offer you a place for 2020 entry. In a small number of cases, however, we may need to defer the offer for a year. We're reviewing places available for this year and will provide further updates to applicants as quickly as we can.

If we offered you an alternative programme, such as a Foundation year, and your revised grades meet the entry requirements for your original course choice, we'll amend your offer to your original choice.

We’re awaiting information from UCAS about when your centre-assessed grades will be shared with us. Please contact us in the meantime, if you think your results have changed. We’re happy to discuss your options.

If your revised grades mean you now meet the criteria for our Vice-Chancellor’s scholarships for exceptional students, your scholarship will be guaranteed. You can find more information about eligibility on our Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships page.

What will uni be like in 2020/21?

Things will be a little different in 2020/21, but you'll still have a great, varied and enriching experience when you study with us this year.

The Clearing phone line helped a lot. I could call and get an instant reply. Although it was an impulsive choice to apply to Portsmouth through Clearing, it was one of the best choices of my life.

How does Clearing work?

To apply through Clearing, you follow these steps:

1. Find courses you want to do

You can find courses by browsing university websites or by using Clearing Plus by choosing the ‘My matches’ option in UCAS Track (Clearing Plus isn’t available to everyone).

2. Contact universities directly to see if they'll offer you a place

You can call us on +44 (0)23 9284 8090 or talk to us on live chat (when available). When you contact us by phone or online chat, we can normally give you a decision there and then.

Another way to contact universities is by selecting the 'I'm interested' button in UCAS Track. This allows universities to contact you if they still have places on the courses you're interested in. But it might mean you miss out on popular courses if universities have already filled places via their phone lines or websites.

3. Accept the best offer for you

When you get an offer, you can accept it in UCAS Track. If you didn't apply through UCAS, many universities let you apply directly.

Clearing eligibility

Anyone can apply directly to us through Clearing, even if you hold an offer from another university or you haven't applied through UCAS yet.

If you're from outside the UK or EU, you can't apply for Clearing through UCAS but you will be able to apply to us directly. Call us on +44 (0)23 9284 8785 and we'll run through everything you need to do.

I had accepted an offer from another university. I decided to change. I phoned the Clearing hotline and the people on the phone were nice and helpful. I loved the courses that were on offer.

Jason: Clearing is an experience that loads of students go through. Talhaa: This is especially for when you don't get the results that you expected. Jordan: It's a backup plan or a support system. Lucy: But it is actually quite a good opportunity to turn that into a positive and actually look at what is happening and where you can go.

Jordan: Anyone can go through Clearing. So people who don't achieve the grades that they wanted to achieve when applying to university. Jason: People who apply for university after the UCAS deadline. Rebecca: Or simply just change their mind and want to apply for university later on in the stage.

Jason: So, first of all, you need to go on the UCAS track on results day to see if you're in Clearing. Rebecca: Have a look at the universities that you think you might like to go to and the courses that you might like to study.

Jordan: Once you're happy with your course and university you can reserve your place. Talhaa: You can find their phone number either on their university website or on the UCAS website. Jason: Take time and do research before making a decision. You could get advice from friends family and teachers.
