A great friend of the University, whose professional expertise informed the development of degrees relating to medical sciences.

Graham Smart was the Pathology Business Manager (1985 - 1995) and Principal Medical Laboratory Scientist (1977 – 1995) at Southampton General Hospital.

From 1980 to 1992, he served as Chairman of the Standing Representative Committee for Medical Laboratory Technology in the EU and as President of the International Association for Medical Laboratory Technology.

A valued friend to the University of Portsmouth, Graham played a major role in the development of the University's BSc degrees in Biomedical Sciences and Medical Laboratory Science, and the MSc in Biomedical Science.

Graham was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1996, following his retirement in 1994. He now spends his time cooking and singing in choirs, both mixed and male voice.
