Doctor of the University

Hana Afiya Satriyo is a senior development professional with over twenty-four years of experience in developing and managing complex development programs in Indonesia. She currently serves as the Deputy Country Representative of the Asia Foundation (TAF) in Jakarta, Indonesia, since January 2020.

She's been working to promote women and minority groups' political participation to be part of Indonesia’s democratisation process. She advocates women empowerment and gender equality, especially within Indonesia’s decentralized governance and democratic development. Hana played a leading role in developing gender-responsive budget programs and worked closely with civil society organisations, government ministries and local governments across Indonesia. As a result, gender-responsive budgeting has become an integral part of Indonesia’s budgetary system.

Hana received a Master’s degree in International Politics in Asia from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London, in 1996. Her publications include:

  • ‘Pushing the Boundaries: Women in Local Government’ in Edward Aspinall and Marcus Meitzner (eds)
  • Problems of Democratization in Indonesia, (Singapore: ISEAS, 2010)
  • ‘Decentralization and Women in Indonesia: One Step Back Two Steps Forwards?’ in Edward Aspinall and Greg Fealy (eds), Local Power and Politics in Indonesia: Decentralization & Democratisation, (Singapore: ISEAS, 2003).
