Honorary Doctor Tim Jackson smiling

Doctor of the University

A biology graduate who has always been inspired by the natural world, Tim had a career in applied agricultural entomology before taking on various lecturing and leadership roles at land-based colleges. From 1998–2020 he served as Principal at Sparsholt College, an Associate College of the University of Portsmouth.

At Sparsholt, Tim championed applied and project-based learning. He assembled an array of employer networks and developed resources including commercial-scale farm, horticulture, animal and zoo animal-based enterprises. This enabled students to be inspired, achieve and progress to fulfilling careers. Long ago, Tim made sure bio-renewable energy and solar PV were part of the fabric of Sparsholt and its curriculum. He remains an active supporter of technological approaches to address climate change.

Today, Tim is proud to be a commissioned FE Adviser to the Department for Education and Board member of City of Portsmouth College, from which many students progress to the University.
