Atomic Diplomacy: Oppenheimer (2023) and the Bomb – how to interpret historical and political movies

Many people get their history from popular movies. As historians how do we interpret such films and their reading of the past? Do they tell us more about our attitudes now than about the historical and political events they depict?

In this session, a member of the History team will guide you in discussion of how movies mirror historical and political trends. How does the movie Oppenheimer (2023) reflect on why the US developed atomic weapons during World War II and why bombs were dropped on Japan in August 1945? How does the movie portray the moral implications of the use of the bomb and atomic diplomacy during the Cold War? How can we use visual sources as a window into understanding the past?

You don't need to have watched the movie as we'll watch clips in the seminar, and reflect on worldwide historical events that you may have touched upon in your classes at school or college.
