I am the Head of the School of Mathematics and Physics, Professor of Applied Mathematics, and a member of the Nonlinear and Complex Systems Group at the University of Portsmouth.
I am a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (FIMA) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). I am currently Chair of the IMA's Higher Education Committee (HEdSA) and am also an elected Council Member of the IMA.
My main area of research is non-linear dynamics, popularly known as 'chaos theory.'

My main area of research is nonlinear dynamics, popularly known as 'chaos theory.' Within that I am particularly concerned with the universal phenomena witnessed at the transition to chaos. This includes the spectacular quantitative universality observed in period-doubling, quasiperiodic systems, Hamiltonian systems, complex maps, and strange nonchaotic attractors. A common theme is renormalization.

Prior to comng to Portsmouth I worked at Loughborough University as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics, and before that at Queen Mary London as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant.
I studied for both a BSc and a PhD at the University of Nottingham.
I have developed and taught very many courses across all levels. Particular favourites include Mathematical Foundations, Real and Complex Analysis, Advanced Analysis, and Nonlinear Dynamics.
