We’re celebrating National Small Business Day on Tuesday 10 May by showcasing our small businesses at Innovation Connect. Sara Watkins, based in Halpern House, is the founder of Hopscotch.

Sara founded Hopscotch in 2014 after leaving a well paid, stable job in London when commuting and family life became difficult to balance. She decided to take the plunge and start her own business so that she could work on something she was passionate about and spend more time with family without the long commute.

Hopscotch helps companies in the design and build industry to reach their target audience and rank on page 1 on Google. As a Digital Content Consultant with over 20 years of experience, Sara helps businesses market themselves and reach the right type of customer, and ultimately increase their revenue. Sara has a deep understanding of user experience, which is fundamental to connecting businesses with the right customers, and has previously worked on projects for BBC iPlayer, Sky News, Premier Inn, and Bacardi.

Sara found initially that setting up a business was very hard and took a long time to figure out the offering and pricing, but she eventually found her stride, adapting when necessary, to make Hopscotch what it is today, nearly ten years later.

Sara said: “I took some advice and mentoring from my local Business support hub and also went to lots of networking groups (some better than others!) to practice telling my story and to present what my business offered. Since then I have put processes in place and streamlined what I do.

“I also reacted to the market quickly and transitioned the business as I went along. For me, this is the most important thing you can do as a startup, if something isn't working and the market isn't biting, then change it, and change it quickly.  So I have transitioned from just offering websites to repositioning people's businesses and getting them seen online through great SEO and user experience.”

Innovation Connect provides office, co-working, and meeting space as well as business services for a range of local businesses, from start-ups to more established companies across four centres in Portsmouth.
