The University of Portsmouth is taking part in a global event to celebrate women who work in data science and information systems around the world.
On Tuesday 13 March, the University is hosting one of over 150 events taking place worldwide as part of the annual Women in Data Science (WiDS) Conference, led by Stanford University in the United States.
The conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science-related research, learn how leading-edge companies are using data science for success and connect with potential mentors, collaborators and others in the field.
There will be three keynote speakers, all successful women in their field:
- Meghan McCarthy, Regional Early Talent Lead, SAP Sales Academy (EMEA North)
- Magali Glover, Head of SAP UKI Alliances, Channels and Partners at SAP
- Cathy Ward, Global Chief Operating Officer at SAP Leonardo Services
- Dr Jana Ries, Senior Lecturer in Quantitative Methods, Faculty of Business and Law, University of Portsmouth
Data science is a rapidly growing field as big data and advanced analytics change the nature of business. As a result, data science techniques and skills have never been more in demand.
David Starkey, Senior Lecturer in Business Systems and Analytics and Co-chair of the SAP Next-Gen Innovation Lab at the University of Portsmouth, said: “Data science is a rapidly growing field as big data and advanced analytics change the nature of business. As a result, data science techniques and skills have never been more in demand, as they foster new ways to look at problems that leverage meaning in hidden data patterns, and lead to unique breakthroughs and innovative thinking.
“The field of data science needs alternative perspectives to generate new ways to make data work harder. The conference is open to all those who are interested in engaging with and learning from the local data science community (both female and male).

The event, which is free and open to all, will take place from 10am to 3pm in TEAL Studio One in the University’s Richmond Building, rooms RB2.08 and RB2.09.
